Were you - Born In Jersey?

American Bistro - The last thing one would expect along this stretch of Washington Avenue is a really cool and memorable restaurant.  Just down the street from where the Soprano's shoot many of their "funeral parlor" scenes is American Bistro scenically located across the street from the local bus garage.  This place is just plain cool and the food is awesome, but take good care in ordering for maximum satisfaction; there's so much to choose from. Personally I recommend  the Pecan Chicken with a honey mustard sauce - it is out of this world.  Another dish that is a patron favorite is the Chicken a la Casa, with chicken, sausage, potatoes and lots of other good things.  If you aren't from the area you might think you just walked onto the set of a movie when you experience the charming character of this place.
As soon as you sit down, the kitchen is already preparing your fresh complimentary antipasto platter, complete with all the assorted cured meats, peppers and of course cheeses.  American Bistro isn't some skimpy suburban knockoff... it's the real deal.  Every restaurant has its own atmosphere and this place has plenty of uniqueness and good food.

The seating is a little cramped but not overly so.  It's not a big place, but the portions sure are and the service is good and friendly.  Parking is somewhat limited, and the small lot fills up quickly, so it's not a bad idea to plan on eating a little earlier than usual.  - Jersey Shadow -

Italianissimo - Tucked away in a West Caldwell strip mall is a great addition to the Essex County dining-out scene called simply Italianissimo.  There is plenty of Italian fare here in the state from the ho hum to the "I just have to have me some."  Italianissimo has a nice inspired menu full of choice and twists making each dish prepared just the way this chef envisions it should be. There is a uniqueness to this place, from the authentic Italian deli to the pizza takeout counter to the main dining area.
The dining area has a nice ambience to it with nicely set tables and exceptionally clean silver and glassware.  It took me a bit of time to decide on a meal because it all looked so interesting and good.  My meal began with the Carpaccio of Filet of Beef with Arugula and Parmesan shavings which was outstanding.  I went with the breast of chicken, piquant roasted garlic oil and artichoke hearts for my entree and it was delicious.  My guest raved about Marsala wine deglazed Veal Scaloppine and how tender and flavorful it was.
I hear somewhere that the "Soprano's" ate at this restaurant and that's cool,  but what really impresses me is good food, good service and people that care about their product and the customer.  If you care to have a great Italian meal, then try Italianissimo.  Jersey Shadow
