NJ Restaurant Reviews

Guerriero's Ristorante - It's not too often one comes into contact with culinary greatness amidst all the places in New Jersey fighting for the dining dollar but perhaps Guerriero's Ristorante is just such a place?  Located behind an ethnic but otherwise nondescript storefront is "Guerriero's."  Stopping by (reservations recommended but not accepted for two people?) at about 5:30 on a Tuesday night, this Morristown Neapolitan hotspot was filling up fast.  It was filling up so fast that the only tables for two left were right by the hostess station.  A request for another table was politely rebuffed, so I wasn't pleased but went along anyway (sometimes I just leave) and took a seat barely inside the dining room.  Okay, I was a little uncomfortable staring at the hostess station, but on to the menu.

Hmmmm, "Authentic Neapolitan Cuisine" sounds good to me!  I went with the meatballs for an appetizer after some counseling from a very knowledgeable, professional and friendly waiter then on to some Veal Piccata for the entree.  Some bread and garlic oil arrived after the complimentary Bruschetta -- all outstanding.

Making the rounds was the chef/owner in his chef's jacket.  He kind of reminded me of Arte Bucco from the Soprano's (in the nicest of ways) as he quipped and bounced from table to table.  The meatballs arrived with plenty to share and they were awesome ... best I've had (in a restaurant) in a very long time.  Meatballs can be tricky when ordered out, and all too often the gravy is lousy or the meat is lousy, but these were just perfect.

The old saying "we eat with our eyes first" is something I do all the time and when my Veal arrived it looked pretty good, so good in fact I didn't know whether to eat it or take a picture of it.  My Veal Piccatta  was awesomely tender and very tasty and it came with a half of a fresh lemon... a very nice and flavorful touch.  Beside the veal was a fresh mixed-field-green salad complete with half an artichoke and roasted potatoes.  My guest ordered the home-made ravioli which was accompanied by a single large meatball.  The filling was beyond spectacular with the creamiest of textures and very rich in flavor.  My guest was way beyond pleased.

Guerriero's needs a bigger, more functional place and I need the secret password or more people to dine with in the meantime so I can be more comfortable back in the dining room at the larger tables. -Jersey Shadow -

Bill And Harry Chinese Cuisine - Amidst the heavily traveled and commercialized Route 10 in East Hanover, NJ, I found a small Chinese restaurant called Bill & Harry's.  This curious name got me thinking right away; could a place with such an American sounding name measure up with good Chinese fare?  The dining room is your basic square with about a dozen or so tables set with fresh white linen table cloths...  simple, functional and comfortable.

Once I sat down with a guest the staff sprang into action with hot tea and ice water with lime, and noodles with duck sauce and hot mustard.  Shortly before the meals arrived the waiter, who might well have been Bill or Harry, efficiently organized the table as if every item had an assigned place.  Once the meal arrived it looked picture perfect.  I went with a spicy beef with garlic sauce which was extra spicy, the way I requested it, and very fresh and tasted every bit as good as it looked.

My guest ordered from the gourmet section of the menu choosing Lake Tung Ting Shrimp.  It consisted of jumbo shrimp, stir-fried with broccoli, snow peas, baby corn, red peppers in a white wine sauce   It was declared to be excellent and the shrimp were cooked to perfection.

Bill & Harry's is most appropriately named as this local mainstay is clearly a vital, integral and meaningful local resource for excellent Chinese food with very efficient, warm, friendly and appreciative service, as well as having very reasonable prices.  This very nice place is a well run and a valued addition to this part of New Jersey and I would be delighted to return. - Jersey Shadow -
