George &
Martha's American Grille - George And
Martha's in Morristown adds a New York
vibe to a changing landscape. I like
Morristown a lot, and much is changing in
town with new development both on and off
"the green." Cutter's, a mainstay for
many years was an old dive bar with good
food, but after a second try at life it
closed once again. Long since gone,
George and Martha rode into town, saw the
potential here and totally gutted the
whole building. Actually, George and
Martha refers to the Washington couple who
continue to make their mark here with the
richness of the birth of America.
It's nice to
see this slice of urban trendy pay homage
to the historical legacy that is
Morristown, but as they say "what's in
it for me?" Well, for starters
the whole place is light, airy and
comfortable with state-of-the art flat
screens in the bar area which also serves
as the entrance. The main
dining area is a collection of tables,
booths and trendy round tables alongside
one wall. Not even a hint of the
former Cutter's remains except, perhaps,
the location of where the new bar was
installed. The place is much larger
overall as George And Martha now takes up
the whole building.
We were
greeted by a very pleasant attentive
server who described the specials and then
took our drink order. I mention this
because it was done nicely with great
care. The "Paul Revere"
sandwich which I ordered amounted to the
classic French Dip with Aus Jus, and
fries. It was very good and very
fresh but it could have really
galloped into the winner's circle with
some added zip, perhaps a homemade
condiment? My guest raved about the
Shrimp Po Boy and the soft drinks
were generous in size.
If you want a
pleasant sit-down lunch, this place is really a
nice selection, and not only would I go
back for lunch but for dinner and
drinks too. Perhaps George and
Martha's wants to be the new Washington's
Headquarters? It surely could
become the dining and watering hole
headquarters for the discerning Morristown
crowd.
