Top Notch Restaurant - Madison, New Jersey, is a beautiful town with a nice mix of old and new homes and architecture.  The town center is particularly pleasant with old brick-front buildings reminiscent of another era.  This may be the reason so many filmmakers choose to use the town as a backdrop for their movies.  Another reason may be the abundance of good eateries within a short distance of one another.  

Within a two-block area, you can find about fifteen good restaurants.  If you want to go out to eat, you certainly can find something to suit your taste.  Top Notch Restaurant in Madison is one of those restaurants designed to provide a cozy and comfortable eating experience.
 
When you enter the restaurant, your struck by a feeling of warmth and relaxation.  The seating is comfortable and the service is good.  The menu is abundant and very interesting.  I don't know that I've ever been in a restaurant that offers Italian food and German food.  Top Notch does, and both are equally good.

 

 
The Top Notch Salad is excellent - baby greens with walnuts, three cheeses, red onions and mushrooms.  Not having had German food in a long time, I ordered the Sauerbraten with potato pancake and red cabbage.  The potato pancake was a bit dry but the rest was very tasty.  The Jager Schnitzel was said to be very good as well.  Shrimp Wellington was another choice - jumbo shrimp stuffed with crabmeat and wrapped in pastry, topped with a Newburg sauce - unusual dish and very good. A Chocolate Mouse Tart was the dessert that got our rave reviews.
 
All in all this dining experience was a winner and an added bonus, was reasonably priced.

Basilico - Main Street in Millburn, New Jersey, is a pretty uptown place loaded with upscale boutiques, galleries, specialty shops and restaurants.  On a recent visit, I decided to check out Basilico's Restaurant for lunch.  I love the restaurants that take full advantage of the nice weather outdoors with a few tables on the sidewalk and a facade that opens all the way to let the fresh air in.  This early fall day, the temps were warm but cool enough for some fresh air dining.  Basilico's has a very NYC feel to it and is a great place for lunch.  It's not very often that I can't find at least one thing wrong with a place, but on this day I was pleasantly surprised that aside from the waiter being a little hard to understand, things were perfect.

 

 
The menu was very uptown as was the service... both very good.  I went with the "Tacchinella" which was a smoked turkey sandwich on whole wheat with lettuce, tomato and a mustard vinaigrette which was very tasty and very filling.  My guest went with the "Spinaci E Fontina" which was a spinach and cheese omelet.  Both dishes came with filling garnishes including shoestring potatoes and were superior in taste as well as being an incredible value.  For the heartier appetites there were pricier full dinners available for lunch such as Veal Milanese.
 
Basilico is the real deal...  authentic, chic and an awesome casual place to dine for lunch.   I left totally satisfied and I'm sure you will too.
